When you think of Switzerland, we’ll bet that your first thoughts are of snowy mountains, watches, cheese, and chocolate. And those long horns called alpenhorns. It is all of these things, and more. Switzerland is also known for its incredible efficiency, cleanliness, safety, and hospitality. And they produce some nice wines too!
Neuchâtel itself is a 13th-century town settled by the Romans, situated at the foot of the Jura Mountains in northwest Switzerland. Major cities such as Berne, Geneva, and Zurich are a short train ride away. This historic town of about 60,000 people is full of old-world charm, impressive architecture, and natural beauty. Although the town is French-speaking, don’t be surprised to hear German, Italian, and Romansh being spoken, the other official languages of Switzerland.
Neuchâtel’s climate is temperate with a lengthy autumn. There is little snow accumulation throughout the winter months in town, but the surrounding mountain region offers extensive cross-country trails and excellent alpine skiing & snowboarding. Spring comes early, and by late February the tulips are in bloom, the perfect time to bike around the lake or hike in the Jura.
One of the terrific things about Neuchâtel is its student-town atmosphere, since it boasts a university and other respected schools that attract students from across Europe. Our students find there is plenty to do, see, and explore, including museums, art galleries, symphony, theatre, festivals, and the scenic beauty of Lac Neuchatel, the Alps, and the Jura. For a small town, there is no shortness of culture and activity. The Swiss rail system links not only people within the city and canton of Neuchâtel, but the rest of Switzerland and beyond. And, it is always on time!
